Meet Stephen, a lean young man about six feet tall. A US Army Veteran, Stephen’s life changed dramatically following excision of a brain tumor. Now, with the devoted support of his family and an incredibly strong will, Stephen is on a journey to once again achieve the freedom of independent walking.

“It’s like having a guide dog you can ride,” jokes Erick M., Retired US Army Specialist 5. Erick is both deaf and blind, yet with the assistance of VA Recreational Therapist Lindsay Connor, NCEFT Adaptive Riding Instructor Heather Schilling, and a devoted team of horse handlers and side walkers, Erick was able to participate in a sport that he enjoyed in his youth.

“Do it with integrity. Do it fairly. Do it right.” Important, special words made even more meaningful because of the man to whom they belong. They are the personal motto of Steve, Retired US Army Major. Steve cherishes his time spent in the Army, but the sacrifices he made for it, including close proximity to too many blasts, have left him permanently challenged by traumatic brain injury (TBI).
